THE SUPER BOWL, THE ECONOMY AND OTHER THINGS THAT SUCK HARD

Well the Super Bowl is over and wow did it stink. Denver must have smoked A LOT of weed before the game because there is simply no other explanation for how bad they were. Seattle scored points every single way you can score in a football game, broke the record for fastest score (12 seconds) and almost had the game's first shutout on league history. Manning was under fire the entire game and every single aspect of the Denver team got outplayed as well.

Even worse, the commercials kind of sucked again. I've worked in these fields before, especially filming commercials which I have several awards for, and my sister actually worked for ad campaigns for McDonalds and Volvo, so I do know what goes into making these things work. They showed a complete lack of imagination for the most part, failing to do even the most basic attempt at selling the product they spent a fortune to hype. Here are the best and worst from last night.

Best three commercials.

3)Toyota- I love the Muppets. So watching Terry Crews get pushed around by his smaller felt companions was really funny. More importantly, I remembered the brand and liked the ad for a car commercial, most of which during the Super Bowl were terrible, like always. How hard is it to sell a car during the Super Bowl?

2)Budweiser- These guys usually have good marketing and this year was no different. The Bud light ad with a guy having a strange night involving Don Cheadle and Arnold Schwarzenegger was good, but the real winner was the heart tugging ad involving a puppy and a Clydesdale that could make a mountain cry. That was a great ad.

1)Radio Shack- The clear winner was Radio Shack, pocking fun at their own image by getting a bunch of 80's stars to clear a store out, providing a Where's Waldo-like cacophony of fun. It was a great ad and did so well, that even though the stock market is tanking as I write this, Radio Shack saw a 7% increase. That is an excellent Super Bowl ad well worth the money.

Worst Five

I have to do five because there were that many that really, really sucked.

5)AXE Body Spray- Nevermind the fact that this stuff smells like a cow threw up all over you, this latest ad for Peace Body Spray (what the hell could that scent possibly be) gave us no idea what the hell they were selling, a serious problem for several of the ads as well. EW’s Darren Franich said it best with, “That Axe ad was one horrific Tom Hanks accent away from just literally being Cloud Atlas.” A terrible ad for a terrible product.

4)Chevy- One of the earliest ads showed a rancher bringing his prize bull to be studded. EEEWWWWW! How does that make me want to buy your car? Trust me, it does not and made me want to turn the channel quick instead. A huge misfire.

3)Maserati- Easily the most confusing commercial of the night, appeared at first to be some sort of weird sequel to Beasts of Southern Wild as child star, Quvenzhane Wallis, was featured in it along side videos of natural disasters. Then all of sudden, it turned into a car ad for the awful named Ghibli, which sounds like a martini more than an expensive car. Terrible, terrible ad.

2)Go Daddy- This group has been falling fast with last year's uber-icky kissing between nerd and model souring everyone's stomach, but was a masterpiece compared to this years crapfest involving Danica Patrick in a muscle suit along with a group of half naked weight lifters running to get spray tans. Didn't get it, didn't like it, hate the product still.

1)H&M- Why this ad hasn't appeared on more lists shows the double standard of today's society that I am sick of. Once upon a time, Super Bowl ads had half naked women and raunchy humor. But the conservatives and feminists bitched up and down last year so instead we got this half baked bunch. But why pray tell is it okay for there to be multiple ads this year with half naked men? It isn't. This one had David Beckham running near naked around the city and I was appalled by it. Look it's fine if you want Disneify the Super Bowl like Times Square, but don't pretend it's fine for men to be exploited any better than it is for women. It's all or nothing here guys. If you want your naked men, I want girls in bikinis too. Considering the Super Bowl is mostly watched by straight men, the difference here is striking.

While all this is going on, our economy is falling apart as even the rich are starting to see the writing on the wall that this whole house of cards is about to come undone. Turns out, you really CAN'T have a middle class when no one is making anything and the powers that be are seeing this far, far too late. With the lowering of QE Infinity, emerging markets are falling off the map. On top of that, China is a heartbeat away from default due to a housing bubble about to burst (and predicted here years ago), manufacturing and sales are dropping fast in the US as money is running out and the stock market is getting hammered on the piling on of terrible news.

The funny part about this is that the GOP is still stuck in Fascist town, literally wanting the same "free market" ideals that China and Russia have (ie, no rules or regulations) which is why those countries are also about to go under big time. If we don't change radically and soon, the world economy will implode in the coming weeks. How many out there really think that the government, on either side of the aisle, has the political will to do anything radical without the other side screaming at the top of their lungs about some nonsense that is not true?

We are also approaching the debt ceiling, which if not raised, will cause the US to default and the next Great Depression to start in earnest. I still find it unlikely that the GOP won't capitulate but their stupidity knows no bounds so who really knows. The fact that some in Congress and in the public do NOT want it raised, demonstrate an idiocy so profound it is breathtaking.

The end appears near as the stock market continues to decline today. The fact that some are saying we need to change is promising. But words are empty without actions and I don't see that happening at all. Be ready for a big time collapse soon. Bet on it.
