Leave it to the GOP to try to rain on former President Bill Clinton's masterful speech last night at the DNC as just another Marxist agenda gone wrong. The brain powers on Fox and Friends this morning, which included the beautiful but empty headed Michelle Malkin, called the speech a joke that had no hope of keeping Obama in office. Apparently they watched the speech without the sound on because it was, quite simply, one of the best speeches give by ANY politician in years, perhaps decades. It was that good. The best part about it was, Clinton didn't stoop to any obvious untruths, unlike the GOP whose entire convention was a liar's parade over who could obscure the truth the best, of which Paul Ryan won hands down with his terrible, lie filled speech. Let's take a look at what Clinton said and how accurate the statements were.
Clinton, Sept 5: “Individuals and businesses have secured more than a billion dollars in refunds from their insurance premiums, because the new law requires 80 percent to 85 percent of your premiums to be spent on health care, not profits or promotion.”
This is absolutely true and I would know as I received a three hundred dollar check from my insurance company for exactly this reason. This is a great policy.
Clinton, Sept 5: “Soon the insurance companies, not the government, will have millions of new customers — many of them middle class people with pre-existing conditions who never could get insurance before.”
After I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes, which was quite the shocker as I am not overweight and don't eat a lot of sugar, I discovered that if I ever moved to a state like NH, I would NEVER get health care. Is there anyone out there who thinks that is a reasonable policy? Obamacare lets people like me get affordable health care where before it would have been out of reach. Without this life saving measure, my life is on the line as the medication needed would be breaking my bank otherwise. As the mandate that everyone bitches about as "unconstitutional" is also the only reason insurance companies can stay afloat, people should realize that without the mandate, you are advocating people to die. How many right to life morons do you think are anti-abortion and anti-Obamacare, a true oxymoron? According to them, if you're not born yet you should get every protection. Once you're out, you're on your own. Douchebags.
Clinton, Sept 5: “And for the last two years, health care spending has grown under 4 percent, for the first time in 50 years.”
This is technically true, but much like Romney's claim of improving the MA economy with little proof, so goes this factoid. We don't really know why health care spending has slowed lately which could be because of the recession, a lower physician payment rate or Obama's policy. But if the GOP is going to take credit for things that may or not be their fault, so should the democrats.
Clinton Sept 5: “That $716 billion is exactly the same amount of Medicare savings, to the dollar, that Congressman Ryan had in his own budget. There were no cuts to [Medicare] benefits. None. What the president did was save money by cutting unwarranted subsidies to providers and insurance companies that weren't making people any healthier."
The first part has been denied by Paul Ryan which makes me think he hasn't actually read his own plan as it is in there. Romney has said he will stop those cuts which then makes the plan unaffordable and bankrupts the system eight years earlier. And while it is true that none of the cuts are to benefits, there is the possibility that the severity of the payment lost may make some providers unprofitable leading them to drop the program all together, but that is speculation and not hard fact.
Clinton Sept 5: “Almost two-thirds of Medicaid is spent on nursing home care for seniors and on people with disabilities, including kids from middle class families, with special needs like Down syndrome or autism.”
As the Romney plan for Medicade is to give the states block grants, millions of people will be cut from the entitlement as the money given will be far lower than the amount of people who will need coverage. What this means is that those in the middle or upper income levels are going to be shelling out huge portions of their salaries and savings on care for their elderly parents, with many moving in with their kids as nursing home care is uber-expensive. Vote Republican if spending even more money on health care costs is what you want or living with your parents you couldn't wait to get away from when you were younger.
Clinton, Sept 5: "So who's right? Well, since 1961, for 52 years now, the Republicans have held the White House 28 years, the Democrats 24. In those 52 years, our private economy has produced 66 million private- sector jobs. So what's the job score? Republicans: twenty-four million. Democrats: forty-two.
Now, there's -- there's a reason for this. It turns out that advancing equal opportunity and economic empowerment is both morally right and good economics. Why? Because poverty, discrimination, and ignorance restrict growth."
This is another truth which seems to get lost on the anti Obama crowd. We do better under democrats than Republicans as safety net issues and helping the poor are good economic policy. Giving all our money to rich people in the hopes that some of it will fall our way is a failed economic policy that they are STILL claiming works, regardless of the fact that it doesn't.
Clinton Sept 5: "Last year the Republicans blocked the
president's job plan, costing the economy more than a million new jobs."
His jobs plan, as explained by several economists such as Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics and Joel Prakken of Macroeconomics Advisers had estimated that
Obama's proposed American Jobs Act would add more than 1 million jobs, with some estimates as high as two million new jobs. Republicans killed the bill with Congressional turtle Mitch McConnell calling it a surefire political edge for the democrats. Way to put country first, dick. Anyone voting for McConnell really needs to put a gun in their mouth and pull the trigger because this kind of attitude will sink this country quick.
So all in all, Bill Clinton did an amazing job selling the President. I can only hope Obama's speech tonight will be as good.
Elizabeth Warren's speech last night was good but not great, which is something that is hurting her chances at winning in MA. She never went after Brown which was really stupid and her ads are not negative enough to do any damage to her opponent. He is vulnerable on his Wall Street, unemployment and student loans voting record, yet we haven't seen one ad about any of these which is a giant mistake. People not only need a reason to vote for you but a reason NOT to vote for the other guy. Recent polls have her trailing by as much as five points but there is still plenty of time to make up that difference. Chances are, Obama will win the presidency. However, the House will stay under GOP control and the Senate, which looked like a long shot a few weeks ago, is becoming much more competitive than it should. All of you out there who can vote, vote democrat. They may suck but not as bad as what the GOP wants to do. Your life actually depends on it.
